Independence is sometimes described as freedom from control. For a publication, it should also mean freedom to follow evidence, acknowledge complexity and correct error.
Media can be independent and still be irresponsible. The public duty begins with transparent distinctions: news should not be disguised advertising, opinion should be signed and institutional statements should be labelled. Strong criticism should be supported by proportionately strong evidence.
An independent publication does not owe every claim equal weight. It does owe relevant parties fairness, readers clarity and the public record accountability. These obligations become more important, not less, when reporting is difficult or contested.
PRESS01 will not always reach conclusions that satisfy every interested party. Its standard must therefore be whether the process can withstand scrutiny.
